Video 'How to Trace your Family Tree'

Home Products Video details

Perfect for beginners

This 45 minute video (VHS PAL) is a basic introduction to genealogy and is aimed at beginners who can’t (or don’t want to) attend training workshops or seminars. Based on Lesley’s very successful ‘getting started’ workshops, the video is in four sections. Each section of the video is introduced and summarised, so the video can be broken into short modules for better learning outcomes. A companion book is available, which follows the same format; the two together make up our Starter Pack for beginners.

Section One: getting started. This section introduces the concept of genealogy and family history, explains the importance of starting with yourself and working backwards, limiting your search initially, talking to other family members (and includes a useful checklist of questions to ask), stresses the need to verify everything, and make sure you’re not reinventing the wheel...in other words, find out if others are researching the same family.

Section Two: basic records. In this section, one branch of Lesley’s family tree is used as a ‘case study’ to illustrate the sequence of searching for birth and marriage certificates. Record repositories are shown, and Lesley demonstrates how to search the UK BDM index, using a microfiche reader at a local LDS Family History Centre. Actual marriage and birth certificates are shown, and how to obtain them explained. Dates of the commencement of civil registration are listed for the UK and the various Australian states.

Section Three: beyond Civil Registration. This section covers church records, the IGI and census records. Lesley shows us how to use a microfilm reader and explains the content of a typical parish register. The Director of the Attadale LDS Family History Centre tells us the background to the IGI, and Lesley points out some of the traps for the unwary in using the IGI. She also demonstrates how to search the IGI using the Internet. Finally, the UK census is detailed and its value is demonstrated as an aid to genealogists through Lesley’s case study.

Section Four: organising yourself. Keeping track of your growing mountains of information wraps up the video, with comments on filing methods and various computer software packages.
